10I found this story to be at times interesting and at times irritating. Some of the characters act as they should, considering the time in which the story is set, and some of them do not. With no reprisals! There seems to be little class distinction other than the occasional mention by a Mama here or there. The daughters – who carry the crux of the plot – seem to be oblivious. I find this very hard to comprehend – or absorb. However, the cover is truly gorgeous—and (I think) accurately depicts the Golden Age of Newport!

This story takes place at the turn of the 20th Century, when Italian immigrants such as Lucy Scarpelli were so looked down upon, it was as if they didn’t even exist. Of course, Rowena Langdon (born to the Gilded Age in every respect) should never have even been aware of Lucy’s existence. Instead, they become best friends. Reality was seldom so. But yet, their motivations were good, and the author is certainly skillful at establishing the behind-the-scenes details.
The relationships are most unlikely, but the reader may be able to overlook those details in favor of the background of An Unlikely Suitor an inspirational historical romance novel from Bethany House.
