A Bright Look at Combining Traditions

By Selina Alko
Knopf, $16.99, 32 pages, 3.5 stars

Daddy Christmas and Hanukkah Mama is a vivid and colorful book about the blending of two holiday traditions within the same family. The main character, Sadie, is absolutely thrilled to pieces that she has both a “Daddy Christmas and Hanukkah Mama” and loves that she gets to have blended holidays. The book nicely shows the elements of each culture that are included: a Christmas tree, a menorah, Santa, turkey with kugel dressing, and sharing stories of the miracle of the oil and the Jesus in the manger. The illustrations are beautiful, bright and a feast for the eyes. Parents will likely get tired of the phrase ‘Daddy Christmas and Hanukkah Mama’ being repeated throughout the book but that is the only real detractor in the book. This is a great book for children who already have blended holidays or those who are being introduced to other cultures and holiday traditions.
