Shhhh It’s Quiet Time

By Deborah Underwood, Illustrated by Renata Liwska
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $12.99, 32 pages

The festive month of December is a time of laughter and joyful noise. It can also be a time of reflection. Author Deborah Underwood perfectly captures the essence of a month of peaceful silence in The Christmas Quiet Book. This darling book is the companion to the national best sellers The Quiet Book and The Loud Book!. Children and adults will fall in love with illustrator Renata Liwska’s precious baby animals that discover some of the most special Christmas moments come wrapped in quiet. Two rabbit siblings find that “searching for presents quiet” is quickly followed by “getting caught quiet.” The book features sweet humor found in tiny details. When the big Christmas tree is lit, “lights on quiet” is followed by “blown fuse quiet.” On a page filled with “Nutcracker quiet,” readers only see the audience as they watch. While some animals are completely mesmerized by the performance, others are silently snoozing in their seats! The swish of arms and legs creates “snow angel quiet.” Readers can relate to “knocking with mittens quiet” and “early Christmas gift quiet.” It is amazing how just a few words on each page create amazing mental images. Adults will surely recall dozens of memories from their past that correspond to each example. Take the time to share these precious memories with the child in your life and help them make some “quiet” memories of their own.
