Readers who love heartbreaking and beautifully illustrated fables look no further than The Wandering Goose: A Modern Fable of How Love Goes by author Heather L. Earnhardt. The main character of the story is Bug. Bug is happy: she has a wonderful garden and has a grand time being outdoors in the sunshine. One day, Goose wanders into her garden. Finding a shared love of gardens, Bug and Goose become fast friends. They spend their time frolicking, talking and eventually they fall in love. Soon Goose’s wandering yen comes back and he pulls away from Bug and eventually leaves. Bug is devastated and feels that nothing will give her happiness again. Eventually the sun returns and Bug begins to make a new life for herself with new friends in her garden. This book is well written from start to finish and the reader feels Bug’s feelings as she falls in love and then goes through heartbreak. The illustrations by Frida Clements are gorgeous and make the story come to life. This book is wonderful; readers will not be disappointed.
