As the Chinese New Year started on January 31, 2014, so began the Year of the Horse. Now your little reader can celebrate too! Most people only learn their zodiac sign when they dine at a Chinese restaurant and study the paper placemat. Babies don’t have to wait that long to learn about their animal signs. Author Joyce Wan has written a baby-friendly board book featuring all 12 animals. My Little Lucky Dragon portrays each critter as a darling baby. Wan’s illustrations are bold, bright and playful. She highlights important words with different fonts and colors. The book’s pages are sturdy and made especially to last long after the Year of the Horse has come to an end. Along with each sweet picture is a phrase highlighting one unique attribute of that particular animal. For example, the green snake reading books in a tree is described as “my clever little snake” and the mouse delivering a present is “my kind little mouse.” The only thing missing is a zodiac chart that parents can use to determine their baby’s Chinese animal.
