Jeffrey Marshall’s Little Miss Sure Shot is a fictionalized biography of Annie Oakley. Although Marshall has researched the details of Oakley’s life, he imagines the day-to-day occurrences and conversations. The end result is that the reader gets a sense of the flavors of the daily life for the oft-mythologized historic figure. Marshall’s book is a short 148 pages, which would make a good introductory reading for a younger teen reader interested in history. Although the book addresses shooting and references the killing of animals, there is nothing in the book that would not be appropriate for even a tween reader who was interested in the subject. The book is also a good entry point for an adult reader unfamiliar with the subject. Adult readers who have read other books about Oakley will likely find this volume too short and perfunctory to add any real depth to their existing knowledge.
