With more than hundred very good vegan recipes Mayim’s Vegan Table by Mayim Bialik is a nice vegan cookbook though not without shortcomings. The first part of forty-three pages is a bit too heavy on proselytizing vegan diet and much too black and white as for vegan vs. conventional diet. Most readers will likely skip pages in this section. The next chapter provides useful information on stocking your vegan pantry. Needless to say, without a health food store carrying vegan ingredients (or online source) you will not be able to reproduce most of the recipes. The recipes and recipe instructions are very good. The recipe layout is excellent, mostly a single page (or facing pages) for each recipe. Head notes are nice and so are the many kitchen tips and sidebars. Bialik assumes that everyone owns a blender and a food processor, called for in many recipes. The only illustrations are sixteen inbound color photos in the center of the cookbook.

“…we don’t expect anyone to pick up this book and become an ‘instant vegan’ but instead to become a more thoughtful eater and ‘feeder’ of children and families.”

This cookbook, however, could have benefited by the careful work of a good cookbook editor. In many recipes the ingredients are not listed according to cooking steps; a must in recipe writing. Occasional errors in recipes also slipped in.
