The first thing you will notice about your copy of The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates: Magic Marks the Spot is the torn edges of the pages and all of the old-fashioned drawings of written letters, though I’m not sure what some of it said because it was written is super fancy cursive. It gives this book the feel that it is old and you are probably headed into a great adventure.

“No self-respecting pirate would be caught dead in a bathing cap.”

Hilary has a magical pet gargoyle, likes to have fun, and really wants to be a pirate. Instead, she is being forced to go to a private school to make a proper young lady out of her. Yuck! They escape and soon enough she finds herself working on a pirate ship disguised as a boy, searching for treasure. The best part of this book has to be the gargoyle. He is always saying something funny, which keeps the book from being serious. Also, I liked that Hilary wasn’t trying to be someone others wanted her to be. She doesn’t like dresses and wants to spend her time being adventurous. I’m so glad I read this book and can’t wait to read the next one in this series!
