Set in an upper-class New York City apartment complex, Visible City is a story that takes the reader through the perspectives of individuals whose stories are intertwined. Nina, mother of two, spends a great deal of her time fantasizing about a life beyond her own: her outlet of choice is peering into her neighbors’ windows in order to get a taste of some other life. Claudia is a former Columbia professor who prefers to bury herself in work above all else. When there is noisy construction going on outside Claudia’s window, it becomes too much and she begins screaming out her window, begging them to be quiet – this commotion gets Nina’s attention and, through brief interactions, their lives grow closer.

Visible City also shows the perspective of members of Nina and Claudia’s families. Through loud construction work, an abandoned train station and a local bakery, these families become far more entangled than they ever imagined. The novel gets three stars based on the storyline, but there is minimal character development and no distinct climax. For an easy read about common first-world problems, Visible City is a novel that is certain to make any reader laugh in knowing discomfort.
