David G. Hartwell in Year’s Best SF 18 brings readers the kind of book that brings home the true genius of science fiction as a genre. This anthology contains 28 stories from authors at the top of their field. Hartwell introduces each story with a brief author bio, as well as the original place of publication, typically sci-fi magazines, and occasionally a brief contextual note. These notes help you get a feel for the breadth of the field and the authors working in it. He also notably includes authors of diverse cultural backgrounds and stories that feel strongly influenced by other cultures, an important effort in a field that can feel like a haven for straight white men. The short story format of this volume (no story more than about 10 pages) makes it excellent reading for the bus, at the doctor’s office or anywhere else you have little bits of time to fill.
