By Ken Blanchard & Mark Miller

Berrett-Koehler Publishers, $22.95, 128 pages

Authors Ken Blanchard and Mark Miller’s Great Leaders Grow is a follow-up book to their successful book The Secret. The storyline centers around Blake, a recent college graduate, and Debbie, his mentor (and main character from The Secret). Blake accepts a job and, with Debbie’s direction, applies the GROW methodology to a problem at work. GROW is an acronym for Gain knowledge, Reach out to others, Open your world and Walk towards wisdom. Debbie shares how managers and leaders can accomplish each of the letters of the acronym through targeted activities and ideas listed in the book.

The authors contend that you will be a great leader if you achieve GROW. Great Leaders GROW is an easy read with a simple story surrounding the author’s philosophy on leadership. The book includes a personal assessment the reader can take to assess his skills and then create a plan for next steps. The authors also suggest other assessments and a recommended reading list. Readers new to management or tenured managers that want ideas on how to develop their personal leadership skills will find value in this book. The beauty of this book is that it’s a quick read with identifiable action steps a reader can implement immediately.
