The Only Book You Will Need for Your Next Remodel

By Mike Holmes
Time Inc., $21.95, 248 pages

Mike Holmes’ mantra of “educate yourself” is pervasive in his book Mike Holmes:  Kitchen and Bathrooms.  This book contains a wealth of information on renovations and remodeling. He starts with the basics such as budgeting, finding the right contractor, and asking the right questions before you begin the remodel. This book is loaded with tips and I love the “What you see. What I see” sections sprinkled throughout the book. He explains the differences of working with older homes versus newer homes and how structural issues with either one can determine the outcome of your project. There is no detail left unexplained in this book: electrical, plumbing, insulation, windows.  Holmes’ chapter on hiring the right contractor is full of helpful hints and tips. There is an informational chapter on using green materials and each chapter ends with a “Following Up: Checklist” that reminds the reader of important questions and items to remember. There are lots of colorful photographs that give the reader ideas but also point out things to consider such as safety and practicality. This is definitely a book you should pick up if you plan to remodel your kitchen or bathroom any time soon.
