Great Resource for Improving Your Running Through Nutrition

By Matt Fitzgerald
Lifelong Books, $17.99, 290 pages

Matt Fitzgerald is a certified sports nutritionist and training coach. Fitzgerald’s latest book, The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition, focuses on “hitting the wall” when completing long distance running races. He contends that hitting the wall is caused by three main factors:  lack of fitness, poor pacing and, finally, nutritional faux pas. The three sections of his book give the reader tools and ideas on how to combat the wall through the nutritional side of running. The first section covers the two-rule diet, which illuminates the ways high carbohydrates and other nutrients can make the difference in a runner’s racing performance. Section two reviews diet plans runners use during training, as well as on and after race day. Section three delivers detailed plans for training and nutrition cooperation. The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition is for the serious marathon runner. Fitzgerald admits that 5K and 10K runners need not worry about his serious nutritional advice. He shares tons of personal stories and draws on other runners’ experiences.  There are several tables loaded with information, but this reviewer would have enjoyed a few more visuals in the book, since it was very text-heavy. All in all, if you are a serious marathon runner logging massive amounts of miles per week, you will gain valuable information and insight about how to fuel your body from this book.
