A Pocket Guide Full of Great Information

By Brian Hill & Dee Power

Allworth Press, $14.95, 214 pages

The Pocket Small Business Owner’s Guide to Business Plans is a thorough and comprehensive reference for writing business plans. The book is logically broken in to four parts:  What a business plan is and why do you need one, writing the plan, crunching numbers and finally, taking action. The chapters also highlight “green light tips”, which are ideas to make the process go more smoothly and “avoid this pothole”, which are things that might be obstacles to success. Hill and Power clearly explain the different components of a business plan and why it is important to have one, in the first place.  Actually, business plans have lots of uses and the authors want to ensure that the end goal is that focus when writing the plan. Part two of the book goes in depth on each of the components such as business models, competition, marketing plans, staffing and risks. Financial models are discussed and most importantly, taking action in order to have a successful company, rather than just a pretty piece of paper.

Clearly the authors know and understand business plans. They offer sound and practical advice. Even business owners that have business plans in place would benefit from reviewing this book and implementing some of the ideas and strategies.
