Prepare to Plan a Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

By Tad Hills
Schwartz & Wade Books, $10.99, 22 pages

Tad Hills has created a much loved series focused on two animal friends. Duck and Goose have appeared in Christmas and Easter books, and they have been the stars of stories about things such as counting and feelings. This fall, your youngster can read Duck & Goose Find a Pumpkin to get in the Halloween spirit.

Babies and toddlers who enjoy board books will LOVE this oversized book. It is sturdy and will definitely withstand dirty hands, wet mouths and all attempts to tear pages. Hills’ illustrations are darling. The bright and bold colors will grab the attention of little readers.

Duck and Goose are excited to find a pumpkin, and each picture shows the birds searching for their treasure in natural areas around their home. They look in a log and in a leaf pile. They search under the water and in an apple tree. Just when they think they have looked everywhere, another feathered friend suggests going to the pumpkin patch.

The text is simple. Kids will benefit from the repetition and patterning that Hills uses. Little ones will anticipate each sentence; parents will be able to leave words out and encourage their kids to fill in the blanks. On their next trip outdoors, kids will be searching in leaves, trees, logs and puddles to try to find their own pumpkins, and a trip to the patch will become the ultimate experience.
