Imagination is the Best Tool for A Child’s Adventures

By Troy Cummings
Random House Children’s Books, $16.99, 32 pages

Giddy-Up Daddy! is the adventure of a brother, sister and their dad who is the best at playing horsey. The trio is chased by two sinister horse rustlers from a rodeo, to a circus and all the way to Canada where the rustlers are caught. The whole wild ride seems quite fantastical before the sun goes down on the last page and the trio head into the house for dinner. The final illustration reveals a back yard full of adventures created using the best tool—imagination.

Troy Cummings’ children’s book even ends with a complement to the children’s mother, who is the best at playing airplane—leaving an open window for a second book. Cummings was inspired to write the book after his own children jumped on his back and began whinnying and playing horsey. Cummings is also the illustrator of the book. Images are cartoonish with large eyes and comically enhanced features. Children between the ages of 3-7 will enjoy imagining the wild ride of the children in Giddy-Up Daddy! again and again.
