Make Fifth Graders Eat Veggies?
By Katy Kelly and Illustrated by Gillian Johnson
Delacorte Press, $14.99, 213 pages
Melonhead and the Vegalicious Disaster, written by Katy Kelly and illustrated by Gillian Johnson, is the fourth installment in the Melonhead series. In this new book, Melonhead is starting fifth grade and is nervous to meet his new teacher, who has a reputation for being tough and mean – she even assigns a homework assignment on their very first day that is due on the second day of school. But Melonhead has bigger problems, as his mom is trying to force vegetables onto the family. For some reason, his mom won’t listen when he says he loves to eat garlic bread and ketchup as his veggies.
Melonhead thinks he will be able to hide the gluey, gummy veggies somewhere else, to make his mom think her cooking is great when she sees his clean plate. However, when the house begins to smell, he knows his plan has gone awry.
True to form, Katy Kelly’s newest installment in the Melonhead series is guaranteed to make young readers laugh out loud and keep turning the pages to find out what will happen next.
This chapter book is akin to books for elementary and middle school students like The Great Brain and The Baby-sitters Club books.
