Make Friends With A Pig Who Says Ribbit!

By Rodrigo Folgueira, Illustrated by Poly Bernatene
Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, $15.99, 32 pages

One day, in the middle of a frog pond, a pig sits on a rock. All the pig says is “ribbit.” The frogs and the other animals who live around the pond are confused. Some believe the pig to be making fun of them, while others think he is trying to make some kind of statement. When no one can figure out why the pig is saying ribbit, they ask the wise old beetle to offer his opinion. The beetle comes to see the pig, only to find he has gone. Everyone is baffled until the beetle suggests the pig may have been trying to fit in, and make new friends. The group of animals feel bad for missing their chance to befriend the pig when they suddenly hear “tweet” coming from a tree above them.

Rodrigo Folgueria’s Ribbit! is a wonderful way to encourage children to open their minds to making new friends. The story is only improved with the soft colors and illustration from Poly Bernatene. Bernatene uses pops of pink to highlight the pig which makes him really stand out among the pond animals. The book will be well-loved by children between the ages of 2 and 5.
