Don’t Shake a Fist at This Book

Old Man Fookwire is back for another adventure with his neighborhood rodents in Those Darn Squirrels Fly South by Adam Rubin. This is the third book in a series that has adults and kids laughing with delight. Fookwire still enjoys painting the colorful birds that visit his backyard and he is still as grumpy as ever. But he is especially grumpy now that fall has arrived and his favorite birds begin to fly south to a warmer climate. The baba, bonga and yaba birds leave first. When the floogle bird flies away, Old Man Fookwire pouts and grumbles. But the squirrels, who make Fookwire even grumpier, are busy planning a vacation. Kids will love studying the flying machines that the squirrels build to travel along with the birds. Daniel Salmieri’s illustrations are very comical. Fookwire’s neck is extra long and the birds are extra colorful. Fun details will catch the eye of little readers. See the squirrels dance the meringue and play the marimba. Fookwire can’t stand being left alone back at home so he travels to the tropical land to be with the birds and “those darn squirrels.” Will they all have a happy reunion and enjoy their vacation? To find out, read this quirky, fun book!
