Fantasy In Every Sense

Edited by Mitzi Szereto
Cleis Press, $15.95, 256 pages

Fantasy can mean dragons, princesses, and magic or it can mean one’s deepest, hidden desires. In the case of Thrones of Desire, it means both. This short story collection features stories with a definite R – or higher – rating and a healthy dose of magic.

There is a lot of variety in the kinds of intimate relations in this book. Same sex coupling, multiple partners, and a number of different kink flavors make a showing, along with some more traditional pairings. Tone also varies across the collection. Some stories are very romantic, some are darker and lack happy endings. But all of the stories have solid plots to go with their R ratings. The handling of sex is not always realistic – this isn’t just fantasy because it has magic and dragons. Still, it’s no worse than any romance book and the diversity is very appealing to the adventurous reader. The  final result is a daring collection that will delight fantasy fans looking for stories with lots of sex, instead of just a few sex scenes.
