A Writer’s Book Companion

By Mary Anna Evans
CreateSpace, $14.95, 294 pages

Writing that first novel is one of the hardest things you can do. Your Novel: Day by Day: A Fiction Writer’s Companion tries to make it easier. This is an excellent resource for someone trying to write a first novel, as it gives writers a blueprint as well as a calendar. The book provides some excellent tips on how to write a better story, ranging from subplots to characters to pacing. Your Novel should be considered a writing companion and consulted often.

Written to be something between a cheerleader and mentor, this book does well on both counts. There is a good mix of advice, check-ins and other motivational tools to keep a writer going for the entire year. The book is written in a nice, conversational tone, keeping it friendly between the author and reader. Even if you never finish your novel – or even come close to it – this book is still worthy enough to be on any author’s bookshelf. This is definitely a book you will enjoy and keep coming back to years after you finish that first novel.
