Fall in Love with Bear and His Secret Friend

By Daniel Pinkwater, Illustrated by Will Hillenbrand
Candlewick Press, $15.99, 40 pages

Daniel Pinkwater’s Bear in Love is the sweet tale of Bear who lives in the woods by himself. One day he wakes up, stretches in the sun and notices a carrot has been left for him. He quickly eats the carrot and begins to sing a song about how good the carrot tasted. The next day, two carrots are waiting for him. And on the third day, three carrots wait. Each day Bear sings a song after he finds the “gift” waiting for him. On the fourth day, when a bunch of carrots are left, Bear decides he needs to do something nice for whoever is leaving the food. He first leaves a honeycomb and tries really hard to not fall asleep so that he can find out who is leaving the food. But instead, a flower is waiting for Bear the next morning. Bear then receives a “special” snack and decides he must do something “extra special.” Finally, Bear meets his unique new friend. Bear in Love is a tale about friendship, counting and giving gifts. The drawings are beautiful, the story sweet and the moment that the two friends finally meet will excite your little reader. This is a must-have book for any bookshelf!
