As Cute as Could Be!

By Kate Duke
Alfred A. Knopf, $16.99, 32 pages

Ready for Pumpkins is the story of Hercules, a classroom guinea pig. Herky – as he likes to be called – feels he is a pretty lucky guinea pig. After all, the kids in the classroom teach him things and the food supply is regular and predictable! As Herky learns about Halloween, he watches the kids plant indoor gardens. Herky decides he wants to plant something too. The story follows Herky as he experiences the trials and tribulations of growing pumpkins in an outdoor garden while he is on summer vacation at the teacher’s home. When Herky returns to the classroom in the fall, he misses his pumpkin plants, but is happy to see them again during Halloween. Ready for Pumpkins is filled with lots of great lessons for children. The illustrations are beautiful and Herky is as cute as could be! Ready for Pumpkins is not just a Halloween story, but also a story about growing things, friendships and learning. This book would be a wonderful addition to any child’s bookshelf.
