By Leonie Morgan
St. Martin’s Griffin, $21.99, 144 pages, 3 stars
For any crafters wanting to break back into crocheting who need a quick refresher, 100 Colorful Granny Squares to Crochet by Leonie Morgan is the perfect book to get you started. This guide to granny squares is perfect for both the novice who needs step by step crochet stitch instructions to the experienced crafter who just needs diagrams for different varieties of granny squares. The book is organized in clear sections beginning with a stitch instructional and technique overview and then delves into the different squares with some patterns sprinkled throughout.
The full color, illustrated guides and clearly marked diagrams are extremely user friendly and helpful and the diverse array of pattern designs are well chosen. The designs are vibrant and colorful although the color palette isn’t that trendy. The colors depicted in the examples of finished squares and projects fit an early 90’s aesthetic. While somewhat off putting, this isn’t a barrier to your own projects because when you are designing your own squares, changing the color is one of the simplest pattern adjustments to make. Overall, 100 Colorful Granny Squares to Crochet is a great resource guide for any crafter who wants to break out their yarn and start their summer projects!
