Necessary Evil, by Ian Tregillis, is the third book in the Milkweed series, a fast paced alternate WWII history series. The book follows the story of Raybould Marsh, a British Spy, as he tries to thwart the Nazi’s and the supermen they have created. In order to fight back, the British turned to warlocks, unleashing a new level of warfare that unfortunately attracts unwanted attention from beings from beyond our solar system. In an effort to prevent the extreme destruction in at least one timeline Marsh must travel through time to an alternate Earth, and stop pivotal events before it is too late.

Ian Tregillis created strong and varying characters for this series, quickly drawing readers into the story. His use of actual historical people adds another layer to the complexity of the narrative. Not only is the alternate history merged with science fiction idea extremely popular, but the book’s writing style will keep readers frantically flipping pages to find out what happens next.

Necessary Evil is a fast paced, incredibly exciting book that is highly recommended for alternate history, science fiction, and mystery fans. This is not a book to be missed.
