Abrams Books for Young Readers, $16.95, 32 pages

This delightful story about friendships by debut author J. Theron Elkins pairs well with cheerful illustrations by Pascal Lemaitre. The story, told in rhymes, brings together complementary food items to demonstrate compatibility.

“We belong together.
Combined, we make a dish.
We’re made for one another,
’Cause together we’re delish.”

Peanut butter and jelly, marshmallows and graham crackers, macaroni and cheese, and a wide assortment of other treats offer humor as personified food characters celebrate their bonds. A funnel cake and powdered sugar enjoy a ride down a ski slope while a hot dog and relish get dressed up for a red carpet event. The color palette in the illustrations offers a subtle demonstration of how opposites on the color wheel coordinate well together.

This hard cover edition has reinforced binding that makes this storybook extra durable for young hands. Young children will find the illustrations fun and educational, while early readers should be able to read aloud the minimal text on each page. You Are the Pea, and I Am the Carrot is an endearing tale of friendships that is sure to generate laughs.
