The first thing you will notice about the book Sparky! is the soft colors of the beautiful cover where Sparky the sloth rests peacefully, the only pet the narrator’s mom would let her have. Her not-so-nice friend Mary has a dancing cat and a talking bird. Sparky does nothing, and he does nothing so slowly. The narrator plays lots of games with him, but she always wins. When Mary comes over, the narrator decides to show everybody that Sparky can do tricks too, but she doesn’t think about his talents very well. He really only sleeps! At one point, she gives him a cookie but takes it away because he is eating to slow. By the end of the book, she realizes that he can still be a great pet even if he does nothing and takes forever to do nothing.

“You can have any pet you want as long as it doesn’t need to be walked or bathed or fed.”

The artwork is beautiful all through the book and is really the best part of the book. It makes you want to have your own Sparky. Any kid would love this book!
