I Pledge Allegiance, by Pat Mora and Libby Martinez with illustrations by Patrice Barton, is a charming book for children of all ages. This picture book has nice illustrations which highlight not only a diverse group of people, but are colorful and eye-pleasing. The book is told from the point of view of young Libby, who not only learns to say the Pledge of Allegiance but also learns a brief history of the pledge, as the book breaks down the true meaning of why children should understand its significance at a young age. The book teaches that a pledge is a promise you make with your heart, which you protect by saying the words proudly.

Libby’s great-aunt has lived in the United States for much of her life and values this opportunity enough to make a commitment to the country by becoming a citizen. As the book goes on, it reinforces through conversations at home and school how important this commitment and promise is, while saying the Pledge throughout the book. Bridging different cultures, this book also includes a few Spanish words, which are spoken as would be familiar in any bilingual home, and portrays the value of a promise, a country and family support.
