Attaining a degree in higher education is the goal of many immigrant families. Often times the mother and father will come over with their young children, and while they work hard to provide; they frequently push their children to go to college and get a degree because that opens the doors to a better life. In this collection we get to explore what it is to be both Latina and the first person in her family to get a degree. The stories range from the first few days at college, the struggles through high school, gaining acceptance from the father, and often times the idea of home and not moving away. Each chapter is short, and tells a story from the authors’ life and how it impacted them. Not all of them knew about how their family struggled until later.

This is a powerful book, especially for those kids who are the first in their family to go to college. It gives voice to the hardships, discrimination, and cultural difference that these people found in college, but also the joy they discovered, the freedom, and the knowledge.
