Children’s author Mary Pope Osborne has been taking kids on adventures across the globe and through time with siblings Jack and Annie in the Magic Tree House series for more than twenty years. The 52nd book in the series was just published, and Soccer on Sunday continues the series’ mix of history and fantasy to create an exciting, information-packed story for older elementary-aged children. In this newest adventure, Jack and Annie, who so many stories ago discovered the Magic Tree House in the woods near their home, find themselves in Mexico City in 1970 seeking out the star soccer player Pelé in order to learn from him the secret of greatness. They have previously learned about humility from Alexander the Great, hard work from Harry Houdini, and finding purpose in life from Florence Nightingale. While Jack and Annie get to watch an exciting World Cup match between Brazil and Italy, they do not get to cross paths with Pelé. However, they learn from a soccer fan they befriend and watch the game with that according to Pelé, enthusiasm is everything. Jack and Annie return home by way of the Magic Tree House and add another exciting adventure to their growing list.
