As if being told the story directly, it is easy to become lost in the scenes, the way of life, and the landscape. Maps at the beginning of the book explain the area, language, and names native to Itta, Greenland to help provide a context to the time, way of life, and the journey.
As Billy Bah connects with longtime family friends on a journey far from home, she reconnects with her roots and treks to a land rich with heritage. During the trip she is hurt, and the pain and inconvenience is so heartfelt, it seems to be felt by the reader for real. The dedication of love Billy has to characters, situations, and purpose is satisfying. This tale is wonderfully written, but the book itself includes a glossary of terms used and relates to the real history within the timeframe, creating a wonderful learning opportunity cleverly woven into the book.
