Silly Poetry for Children

By Michael Rosen, Illustrated by Quentin Blake

Candlewick Press, $15.99, 80 pages

Bananas in My Ears brings the silly back to childhood. The collection of nonsense stories, poems, riddles and rhymes harkens back to the era of Shel Silverstein, Richard Scarry and Roald Dahl. It is soon to be the next required book on every child’s shelf, with classic poems and lines children can learn to recite by heart.

The poetry throughout this 80-page collection covers all parts of a child’s life, from breakfast to bedtime. Children’s imaginations will be running wild as the book poses questions and tells stories of mythic proportions. It will undoubtedly be a bedtime book kids will ask to read again and again.

While not every poem rhymes, each one has a whimsical illustration by Quentin Blake, illustrator of famous Roald Dahl books like The BFG and Matilda. The squiggly images will make children laugh out loud as they add to the already wonky writing by Michael Rosen.
