Joseph Ritco has been a teacher for over 20 years and has held administrative leadership roles in international schools over the past decade. His book Implementing Transformational Leadership in International Schools outlines his beliefs, based on his education and experience, as pertaining to the routes administrators need to take to be successful with their teachers and students and the most effective methodologies to use to achieve positive ends.

The issue with this book as it relates to the layman or laywoman is that it seems to be a scholarly paper, perhaps a thesis, turned into a published book. The format is academic, not literary. Citations abound and subject-related literature and theories are referenced frequently. Unless one is already familiar with the subject of administration of international schools or interested in doing extensive research into the subject, these references may be lost on the reader, making an already challenging subject harder to delve into.

That said, it is clear that Ritco has ample experience in this field and his opinions are well-considered and based on both experience and research. For someone who works in an international school, whether in a leadership position or as an educator, Implementing Transformational Leadership in International Schools is an informative and thoughtful read. For those who are neither educators nor intrigued by international education, the book may not be as interesting. Then again, that isn’t the target audience.
