Portland Book Review
About Portland Book Review
Portland Book Review is an independent literary publication for indie and self-published books, built for readers in the Pacific Northwest and the wider national audience that follows Portland’s literary culture. We’re part of the City Book Review network, a group of 9 city-based review outlets across the U.S.
Portland is the city that made Powell’s Books a pilgrimage destination. It’s home to Tin House, one of the most respected independent publishers in the country. Its readers are deeply literate, politically engaged, and reflexively suspicious of anything that smells like corporate publishing.
That’s our audience. And it’s an excellent one for indie authors who’ve built something real.
What We Review
We review self-published and independently published books across all genres. Portland readers are especially drawn to literary fiction, environmental and nature writing, speculative and weird fiction, personal essay, and poetry — but we’ve seen genuine enthusiasm for well-crafted work in every genre we cover.
We don’t look for safe books. Portland readers have spent decades choosing indie over chain. They respond to work that takes a genuine risk.
Our reviews are written by human readers, never generated by algorithm. Every review reflects a real encounter between a reader and a book.
Why Portland Readers Trust Us
Portland’s reading community has zero patience for manufactured credibility. A paid placement masquerading as a review gets spotted immediately. We don’t do that.
Portland Book Review maintains full editorial independence. Authors pay for the review service — the scheduling, the reading, the professional write-up. They don’t pay for a particular opinion. Our reviewers are free to say exactly what they think.
Every review we publish is indexed by Google and structured for AI citation. When someone asks Perplexity or ChatGPT for Portland book recommendations or indie fiction worth reading, our content is part of the search ecosystem that answers that question.
Part of the City Book Review Network
Portland Book Review is one of 9 outlets in the City Book Review network, alongside San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tulsa, Chicago, Manhattan, and Kids Book Buzz.
For authors, the network means your book can reach readers in multiple cities through a single submission process. Portland plus Seattle plus San Francisco is a West Coast literary presence that mirrors what a traditional publisher builds through national distribution.
The network was designed for indie authors who deserve professional coverage and know that readership doesn’t stop at city limits.
