Nicki Collins Geigert has assembled a visually stunning survey of Greece in her recent publication A Girl’s Greek Odyssey. Geigert, a travel writer and photographer, takes readers on an extensive tour of sunny shores, national treasures, and world-renown destinations sprinkled throughout the Greek terrain. She reaches so many destinations all through the lens of her niece Savannah’s graduation trip. With the recent graduate leading the way, Savannah’s exploration of Greece acts as the focal point of this guidebook. This perspective is a refreshing shift and makes the content all the more approachable and engaging for readers. Through this lens, Geigert pairs exceptional photographs of various locations with short descriptions that speak to the robust history and thriving culture of the country. The author includes photographs of not only the Greek landscape, but also action shots of her family and delicious food imagery as well to compliment the selection of historical sites. From the Neoclassical Academy of Athens to the Palamidi Fortress of Argolis to the archaeological site of Delphi, Geigert covers an array of well-known Greek destinations. Her study of familiar sites will expand on and bring together in conversation recognized theories and facts. She also dives into lesser-known sites such as Melissani Cave and Vlychada, which further elaborate on her study of the country’s offerings. It is the lesser-known sites that Geigert covers that truly elevate this guidebook and set it apart from others on this theme. Geigert’s layout design and use of language make the material very accessible across age groups. Regardless of background, readers can easily pick up a copy of Geigert’s work and appreciate the extensive content she shares. Those new to the field or with previous knowledge of Greek history and culture will learn something new and appreciate the content’s presentation. The work earns 4 stars for the breathtaking photographs and thorough descriptions. Some readers may long for additional text on some of the pages but the photographs are a striking distraction. In some areas, Geigert’s descriptions are antidotal with the lavish photographs occupying the main stage. But ultimately, readers will appreciate her ability to step back and let the images speak for themselves. Because they do. Readers will take an unforgettable trip with Geigert and her family. Together we will see some of the great wonders still in existence without ever leaving the comfort of our homes. A Girl’s Greek Odyssey is an adventure every reader needs to take this summer!
