Description
The town of Portscatho is full of traditions and superstitions. They go to the wise woman for healing and charms, as well as spells. From her, they can get A Spell for Drowning or one to save a life. It’s time for the wise woman to choose a replacement, however, and she chooses Kensa, a headstrong girl who always wants to be first. Kensa finds the life of a wise woman to be difficult, and after a huge mistake, she seeks the help of the Bucka, the Father of Storms, which might prove to have too high a cost for her to bear.
While Cornish mythology is fascinating, this particular tale was hard to get invested in. It felt a bit disjointed and hard to follow. I don’t know if the author is intending to write more stories about Kensa or if she left it unresolved on purpose. If you enjoy historical fantasy, you might enjoy this, but I would personally recommend The Bear and the Nightingale series by Katherine Arden instead. It’s up to you.
