Attorney Andy Carpenter is ready to retire. Author David Rosenfelt has other plans for Andy. This charming mystery is the 32nd in the Andy Carpenter Novel series. There’s a certain predictability to these novels. Andy is a kindhearted lover of dogs who manages to find himself in the middle of some very dangerous legal cases.
This time around, Andy is asked to defend a homeless veteran accused of murdering an eccentric billionaire, oh, and find a temporary home for his dog, Hope. Andy’s wife, Laurie, a former police officer, tries to keep Andy safe, preferably at home. Of course, she gets resistance because we know that he can’t turn down a dog owner who has been wrongly accused.

Author Rosenfelt is good at keeping the mystery flowing along while injecting lessons in courage and dedication to creatures, human and animal. One cannot help but see that Rosenfelt gives Andy values that he himself lives by. Andy can be stubborn and sometimes a bit unaware of just how much he puts himself in danger. Fortunately, Laurie and the rest of Andy’s crew can save Andy once again.
