Most of us have a sense of humor, though its nature varies from individual to individual. There must be a special population that enjoys the challenging whimsy of comic Joshua Barkman. Using delightful sketches of various birds, as well as cats, raccoons, and insects, these drawings attempt to capture different aspects of the natural world. The book is divided into four sections, placing the denizens within the seasons of Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. While most of the one to four-panel comic pages are elegantly drawn in black and white, some also flare up in bright colors for the warmer seasons. The characters make several pithy comments reflecting on silly or overly obvious observations, and many other pages lack text, allowing the reader to interpret the message from the stance of the posed figures. Many pages did not resonate with me, some that evoked a smile, but mostly, this reviewer just enjoyed gazing at the displays. This comic collection will likely appeal to Barkman fans who appreciate his comedic wit about the absurd aspects of life.
