Most of us grew up reading dusty, dull renditions of Greek myths, and yet, young people all over still fall in love with the myths, the characters, and the magic of these stories. So what is the point of bringing out a new rendition? Charlotte Higgins has not just written a new version of the myths with fresh language, which might well have been enough to garner new readers, but she has stepped back and taken a new perspective. While there have always been a lot of female characters in the myths, they have never really taken center stage as they do in this retelling. Higgins does not soft-pedal the violence and brutality toward women so rampant in Greek myths but uses that in a way that highlights the roles assigned to women and how women were thought of and treated at that time. The writing is lively and exciting, the characters, as they should be in myths, are larger than life, and the attention to detail is great. The design of the new book with delicate illustrations by Chris Ofili will delight fans of mythology. Don’t miss this wonderful new retelling.
