Hummingbird
Olive Martin has osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle bone disease. One fall and she can break a bone, so she’s been homeschooled her whole life, until she convinces her parents to allow her to attend Macklemore Middle School so she can meet her BFF. There, she learns about a magical hummingbird that grants wishes. She decides to form a BlumeBird Society to find the hummingbird in the hope of having her wish granted.
I absolutely love middle-grade books, but I had a hard time getting into this story. I tried reading this book aloud to my children, but they were bored and stopped listening. While I love reading the author’s own personal note about OI, I wish the story was more realistic instead of all the magical elements to the story. Finding a wish-granting, magical hummingbird was so predictable.
This story lacked heart, which you would expect a story like this to have. I liked <em and Out of my Mind more than this story. While I didn’t like this book, readers who like magic might enjoy this book more than me.
