Kummer supports his fantastical madness with dark, haunting illustrations. As chaotic as the story is, Kummer’s art brings his tale to life. At first glance, the art seems a bit cartoonish. But somehow the fun characters fit well in this hellscape of burning buildings and bloody battles. This novel jumps time lines and dimensions as the hero is pursued by a metallic demon, fends off zombies, and destroys the evil Bob. Confused? Yeah, this graphic novel can do that. The narrative demands patience and a willingness to embrace the absurd. But for readers who do not have enough chaos in their lives, Ionheart is a blast.
