Like her granddad, Joy is a maker who needs a project. Together, they decide not just to rebuild a bent, rusty bicycle, but to make it one of a kind with rainbow streamers, a white wicker basket, a pink-and-yellow seat cover, and cards in the spokes. Joy is absolutely delighted until her friends tease her about her bike. In a fit of anger, Joy destroys her bike. Slowly, Joy comes to realize that while no one is teasing her, she isn’t happy anymore. She also realizes that the people who teased her all look alike and no one looks special. Joy decides to retrieve the damaged bike, and with her grandfather’s help, they find Joy’s joy again.

Bestselling author Sherri Duskey Rinker has written a wonderful book that touches on many important topics: the lure of conformity, the joy of self-acceptance and inventive self-expression, the danger of anger, and even the value of recycling. At the same time, bestselling illustrator Ana Ramirez Gonzales’s illustrations in brilliant, warm colors complement the text and make Joy’s personality leap off the page. In sum, this is a beautiful book.
