Legacy: Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance

We rated this book:

I was not familiar with the golden shovel method of writing poetry. In this slim volume, poet, Nikki Grimes, masterfully turns gold into bright glittering ornaments. By truly standing on the shoulders of women poets of the Harlem Renaissance, she converts fragments of their poems into entirely new conceptional poetry of her own making. This is a masterful turn and turn of phrase. This work is truly a celebration of heritage.

Grimes is best known for her writing for children, but this collection is suitable for any age. The book would be worth reading for the poetry alone, but a collection of vibrant and exciting illustrations make turning each page a wonderful delight and joy. All of the illustrators are black so the pictures add resonance to many of the poems. The illustrators display a deep response to and understanding of the written words. The colors are magnificent, adding to the richness of this volume. At this time in our nation’s history, it is wonderful to see an artist pay homage to those who came before her and to celebrate their words in her unique and gifted way.
