Description
This is an epic story about human connection and compassion. The eleven year old Native American boy, Levi, attends a boarding school which is designed to cruelly expunge any trace of his heritage and culture. However, when the agents come for the younger child, Reuben, their mother sends them off into the world to hide. The younger boy lives in a dream state which marks him as especially gifted in his culture. As the book opens, the young boys are riding a freight train, frightened and alone. The writer is gifted in creating the perilousness of their flight and the dangers to them as they face life on the run without food, shelter or money.
The boys are not the only characters who are lost in this story. The two agents who come for the boys are adrift; one in confusion, the other in cruelty. The couple who encounter the boys have lived through great tragedy and have lost their connection. This is a powerful book about community and a healing culture.
