Neferura is the daughter of the great Pharaoh Hatshepsut and high priestess of Kemet. Neferura cares greatly for her people and serves them faithfully. All of that is about to come to an end when her half-brother Thutmose returns to court and plans to end her mother’s rule. Neferura will do whatever it takes to stop him, including contacting a tattooed wisewoman and her network of spies. As soon as Neferura contacts the mysterious Hathor, everything changes and history will never be the same.

You can clearly see the author’s extensive knowledge of Egyptian history come to light in this fictional novel. I found it extremely interesting because what I’d previously read about Hatshepsut made her sound like a wonderful and wise woman who managed to rule all of Egypt and peacefully, bringing art and culture to the people. She didn’t come across as the best person here. There are plenty of strong, capable and wise women in this story, though.

It really is a compelling read on what life would have been like in the court of a pharaoh for a woman, especially a princess. If you enjoy historical fiction, this book is for you.
