Description
This completes the trilogy of the royal family of Great Britain. I was hopeful upon reading the introduction that the book would focus on Elizabeth II and her remarkable reign. Unfortunately, the book centered on the Duke of Windsor and the machinations he unleashed after his abdication from the throne.
The subtitle of the book is the Rebirth of Royalty, which I found to be somewhat of an overpromise. There are some surprising facts, however; this reader was unaware of the extent of the Duke’s support of Hitler and his regime. Also, I did not know that Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II were so closely related through Mountbatten.
The book did bring me closer to the humanity of Elizabeth’s father, George VI. For better or worse, the man suffered greatly from the responsibilities which were thrown upon him. He guided his nation through World War II while he smoked incessantly and ruined his health through justifiable worry. It was wonderful to read how closely he befriended and groomed his daughter for her responsibilities.
