The subheading of this book reads, “a literal triumph”. This reader has no idea what that means, particularly after reading this collection of random thoughts. Reading this book is like reading someone’s diary musings about their time in high school. We are introduced to many characters, some well-known to the narrator and some barely known. Other than introducing a podcast to make more money, his chief obsession is with his deceased friend, Seth. It appears there was more going on in their high school than the semi-cool kids realized. The book is somewhat like a Hunter S. Thompson memoir, but without the shock or the narrator’s heavy drugs. True, the narrator smokes and drinks, but at a moderate level. It isn’t easy to relate to any of these half-baked characters or to find the narrator sympathetic. He constantly plays up his insecurities and lack of social graces as if that would make him more relatable. This is writer Jeremy Gordon’s first novel, and unfortunately, it could benefit from a good editor.
