Description
Signal Fires is a beautiful story centered around two families, the Wilfs and the Shenkmans. The author does a wonderful job of describing the way the families are intertwined. Dr. Ben Wilf and his wife, Mimi, have two children, Sarah and Theo. The book starts out with a horrible accident that leaves everyone in the family scarred for life. As time passes, life happens. Ben delivers his neighbor’s son, baby Waldo Shenkman. Ben and Waldo create a sort of grandfather/grandson relationship, and Waldo doesn’t learn until later that it was actually Ben who delivered him. Mimi develops Alzheimer’s and is sent to live in a home where she is taken care of. Until one day, she disappears. And everything in the story comes together full circle.
This book is heartwrenching at times but also chronicles the lives of these two families in such a way that the reader will feel like they know what each character is feeling and thinking. A true story about life, love, victories, tragedies, and what family means. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys realistic domestic fiction.
