The death of Pepper McKay will hardly elicit any elegies from the residents of Absaroka County, Wyoming. The owner of the O-Kay Ranch was an unpleasant drunk who was known for ungentlemanly behavior around various women. While his death initially appears accidental, Sheriff Walt Longmire soon has reasons to believe Pepper met with foul play, and the list of possible suspects is extensive. While any one of his three sons may have possessed a financial motive for patricide, Pepper had run afoul of many neighbors and other Absaroka County residents, so the motive might be less obvious. The latest case would qualify as enough of a headache if it weren’t for the fact that wildfires have spread and begun to threaten Absaroka, and a Russian assassin that Walt has tangled with has now become his responsibility.
