Description
The story of the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II, especially the uprising in 1943, is a story that has been told many times and through many different lenses. This story focuses on the young women, especially those who could pass for Aryan and interact with the outside world, and their experiences. Just wish it were a better book than it ended up being. During World War II, the Jews of Warsaw, and in many other European communities under German rule, were locked into a ghetto that became increasingly smaller, especially after the building of the death camps. Some of these ghettos rose up in revolt, knowing that it was pretty much a suicide mission, with the most famous being the Warsaw uprising, which lasted a couple of weeks and stymied the German Army at a time when it needed all the troops at the front lines.
One of the main issues with the book, besides a lot of names and groups thrown at the reader quickly, is that we never get to know the women very well before we change to someone else, repeat over and over. It would have been better to focus on one woman and her story.
